Handkerchief Heights is a cottage in Stain'd-by-the-Sea where a washerwoman used to live. Ellington Feint was living there when Lemony Snicket fell into a tree from a hawser.
Snicket is told that it was named ‘Handkerchief Heights’ because the washerwoman used to hang handkerchiefs on a clothesline. It is later revealed that this is a lie and newspapers were hung on a hawser to let the ink dry.
