Dr. Isaac "Ike" Anwhistle, brother of Gregor Anwhistle, was a member of V.F.D. and was married to Josephine Anwhistle. He died while on a picnic with his wife, because he insisted on swimming in Lake Lachrymose even though he had just eaten, and was devoured by the Lachrymose Leeches. He only waited 45 minutes before swimming. He thought that was enough (he should have waited 1 hour).

In some currently undisclosed way, Ike (and presumably Gregor) is related to Beatrice Baudelaire[1], as seen by their shared skill in whistling with mouthfuls of crackers.

Ike seemed to be braver than his wife. They built a house literally hanging off the edge of the lake, and swam often in its waters. However, it is possible that Ike was not in fact more courageous than Josephine but more reckless. The aforementioned placement of their home seemed unsafe -and indeed proved to be so when hit by Hurricane Herman- and Ike's disregard for waiting an hour after eating before going for a swim in Lake Lachrymose ultimately led to his death.

In spite of his bravery Ike may have had his phobias too. Josephine said that she and Ike feared to have children, but why this was is never explained.

According to Josephine Ike shared her love of grammar.

  • He was able to whistle with crackers in his mouth, his specialty being Beethoven's Fourth Quartet. The only other person known to be able to do this is Beatrice Baudelaire, who could whistle Mozart's Fourteenth Symphony. According to Josephine, this skill is a family trait.
    • His name Ike put with Anwhistle sounds like "I can whistle."
  • In The Beatrice Letters, Ike gives Lemony Snicket a Lachrymose Leech paperweight as a graduation present.

  1. 1.0 1.1 Whistling with crackers is stated to be a family trait, meaning that both Beatrice and Ike - and presumably Gregor who is the brother of Ike - are related in some biological way
