"The Carnivorous Carnival: Part One" "The Slippery Slope: Part One"

"The Carnivorous Carnival: Part Two" is the eighteenth episode of Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events. It covered the second half of The Carnivorous Carnival.

Official synopsis[]

Still posing as conjoined carnival freaks, the Baudelaires brace themselves for a beastly fate. Will good fortune intervene...for once?

Plot[]

Olivia Caliban explains to the Baudelaires that she is a recent member of V.F.D., the Volunteer Fire Department. She reveals "Madame Lulu" is an alias of a rotating position, and the previous Madame Lulu went to retrieve the Sugar Bowl at the burning Heimlich Hospital and has not returned. Olivia and the Baudelaires lament the death of Jacques Snicket. Olivia explains that she only told Count Olaf that one of the Baudelaire parents is still alive in order to keep Olaf busy and away from the orphans, but she surmises that if Jacques believed there was a survivor, he is probably right as his research is never wrong.

Olivia briefly shows them The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations and explains V.F.D. has a secret headquarters in the Mortmain Mountains and that if one of their parents was still alive, they would likely be there. She gives them a map coded with stains; the Baudelaires suspect that a stain in the Valley of Four Drafts ("VFD") could mean that it is the headquarter's location. Violet Baudelaire plans to repair a rollercoaster car that will drive them there. Olivia explains that there was a schism in V.F.D. where one side decided to start fires. Olivia mentions a night at the opera and a sugar bowl, but Olaf interrupts. He announces that tomorrow, one randomly chosen freak will be devoured to starving lions in a pit. Olivia does not object. Violet notices that Esmé Squalor has a noodle whip that could be used to repair the rollercoaster as a replacement fan belt.

That night, the Baudelaires try to convince the freaks, Hugo, Colette and Kevin, that they should protest being eaten by lions. Esmé comes wearing an outfit that says "I ❤ Freaks" and promises that if the chosen freak throws Madame Lulu into the pit, they can join Olaf's troupe. As Esmé leaves, Sunny secretly steals the noodle whip. Violet repairs the rollercoaster, but it fails during the middle of the right.

Unfortunately, morning comes and the time of the lion show has begun. The Baudelaires take their chances of not being selected and are present at the show, and it seems that the Baudelaires have not told Madame Lulu about her possible murder, who has also come. The lion-feeding show is attended by Arthur Poe, Mr. Remora, Mrs. Bass, and some villagers from the Village of Fowl Devotees. Olaf unfolds a paper that will show who is to be devoured by lions and Beverly and Elliot are picked (this was probably rigged). They manage to stall, saying it would be more entertaining if someone pushed them in. Olaf almost does, but he backs out when the lions act aggressive to him, causing him to claim he is allergic to cats.

OliviaDies

Olivia gets fed to the lions.

Esmé, secretly wishing for Beverly and Elliot to shove Madame Lulu in, pressures Madame Lulu. Madame Lulu and the Baudelaires whispering to each other prompts Olaf to get impatient; he says that whoever pushes Beverly and Elliot will get a special reward, causing crowd chaos. With all her strength, Madame Lulu shoves the Baudelaires across the pit and orders them to flee, which they do. Olivia confronts Olaf, and he recognizes Madame Lulu as "that school librarian", to which Olivia responds, “I’m more than that, I’m a volunteer”. Olaf takes this to mean Olivia was volunteering to be fed to the lions and he kills her by slicing the rope holding the plank she was standing on, causing her to get devoured by the starving lions below.

The Baudelaires hear Olivia’s scream and figure out that she was killed. They return to Madame Lulu's tent. The crowd watches the lions messily eat Olivia, and are horrified by how gruesome and bloody it was. Olaf and Esmé enter and offer them to join their troupe and say that the carnival and rollercoaster will be burned. Olaf takes the map from the Baudelaires and knows it's the location of the V.F.D. headquarters, as he is familiar with coded stains. Olaf mentions he tried to push a woman in a dragonfly costume off a cliff at the headquarters, but the wings worked. This means that he was fooled by Madame Lulu that the Baudelaire parents were alive. Olaf posits that one of the Baudelaire parents may be hiding there, and it is their next destination.

The carnival is burned down to destroy the evidence. Olaf takes "Chabo" with him and the Baudelaires reluctantly don't argue so that they are allowed on the trip. Also, Larry Your-Waiter is seen in a V.F.D. tunnel on a phone conversation with someone, presumably Jacquelyn. He mentions he is on his way to the V.F.D. headquarters after learning the "survivor of the fire" is also headed there. Then he states that he smells smoke. Together Olaf, his employees, and the children depart for the mountains.

TaxiWoman

The mysterious woman arrives.

Driving away from the Caligari Carnival, Arthur Poe states to someone on the phone that the tip that the Baudelaire children were sighted there was not true. He states that he will head home as soon as his passenger is given a tour of Mulctuary Money Management. This passenger turns out to be Mrs. Bass. Meanwhile, a mysterious woman, the previous "Madame Lulu", appears in a taxi and watches the carnival burn.

CarriageRoll

The Baudelaires rolling to their deaths.

Beverly and Elliot are in the travel trailer caravan behind Olaf's car while Chabo is in the car. Olaf then reveals that he has already seen through the Baudelaires' disguises. Hugo, Colette and Kevin, who are riding in the trunk of Olaf’s car, cut the rope, sending Violet and Klaus descending to their doom, on a literal cliffhanger.

Deviations from the novel[]

  • In the TV series, Olivia reveals Madame Lulu is the alias of a rotating position. In the book, this distinction is not made and the reader is led to think there is only one Madame Lulu. In the TV series, Olivia has never met Olaf before as "Madame Lulu" while in the book, Olaf visited Madame Lulu multiple times to learn where the Baudelaires are.
  • In the book, Mr. Poe is absent. In the TV series, he is at the carnival's lion show. This continues Mr. Poe's increased involvement in the TV series.
  • In the book, when the Baudelaires are chosen to die and thank him for being chosen, Olaf replies, "Um, you're welcome," and looks a bit surprised. In the TV series, he immediately and more nonchalantly says "You're welcome." This subtle detail sets up book Olaf as being more sympathetic and being more like a normal human than one would expect, while TV Olaf is more twisted.
  • In the book, Madame Lulu is reluctantly willing to throw the Baudelaires into the pit, although she says sorry. In the TV series, Madame Lulu shoves the Baudelaires across the pit because it is small enough, making TV Madame Lulu braver and more heroic.
  • In the book, it is ambiguous how Madame Lulu dies, as she falls in during the audience skirmish. The TV series makes it explicit Olaf kills her.
  • In the book, the Bald Man also falls into the lion pit and dies. In the TV series, however, he survives.
  • In the book, before her death, Madame Lulu told Olaf the true identity of the Baudelaires as freaks, making the reader feel betrayed when the caravan rolls down the mountain. In the TV series, Olaf says he realized it himself without the help of a fortune teller.
  • In the book, Lemony Snicket said that he was Olivia's associate. In the TV series, Lemony says that he never had the pleasure of meeting Olivia.
  • In the book series, the crowd enjoys watching Madame Lulu and the Bald man get eaten. In the TV series, they are repulsed at the sight of Olivia getting mauled by the lions.
  • The older Baudelaires ride in the Freaks Caravan in the novel, while here they ride in the Gift Caravan.
