"The Reptile Room: Part Two" is the fourth episode of Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events. It covered the second half of The Reptile Room.

Official synopsis[]

Klaus and Violet suspect Count Olaf and his evil cohorts when a lifeless body turns up in the reptile room. Sunny sees the inside of a suitcase.

Plot[]

The Baudelaires wake up the next morning only to find that Monty has been killed and left in the Reptile Room for them to find. They immediately suspect Stephano. Before they can do anything about it, Stephano kidnaps Sunny and threatens to hurt her if Violet and Klaus don't go with him to Peru.

Unexpectedly, Mr. Poe appears as Stephano goes down the driveway and they get into a car crash. Stephano introduces himself as Uncle Monty's assistant and explains that Monty is dead and that he was taking the Baudelaires into town to get a coroner. Mr. Poe tells them that Uncle Monty had called him up to deliver their passports as they were supposed to head for Peru today. Violet and Klaus tell Mr. Poe that Stephano was really Count Olaf in disguise trying to take them away, which he does not believe.

After Mr. Poe decides that no one should leave and they should head inside to call the police about the matter, the coroner arrives at the door. Nurse Lucafont heads inside to examine Monty's dead body. Their autopsy determines that Uncle Monty died of a snakebite from the Incredibly Deadly Viper.

Violet argues that the Incredibly Deadly Viper was a docile animal and could never have killed Uncle Monty, but Mr. Poe does not believe her when Stephano points out that the reptile was not in its cage. Klaus also points out that the Nurse examining Uncle Monty's death was also one of Count Olaf's henchpeople (Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender), Mr. Poe doesn't believe him either.

Stephano declares the case is concluded and that they must set off to Peru now, Mr. Poe disagrees and tells them their trip will have to wait and that he must leave. He's unable to leave as Stephano declares that Nurse Lucafont had told him the house will be put on quarantine because of the Incredibly Deadly Viper on the loose. The rest of Count Olaf's troupe come rushing in disguised as the authorities who Mr. Poe doesn't believe to be Count Olaf's henchpersons, as the Baudelaires pointed out. They're sent to their room upstairs as the adults deal with the quarantining the house.

Indignant that Mr. Poe does not believe them, the Baudelaires hatch a plan to secure evidence that could help them convince that Uncle Monty's death was not caused by a snakebite.

Klaus sneaks into the Reptile Room in search of one of Monty's journals, convinced that there must be notes about the viper in it. Meanwhile, Violet and Sunny go to Uncle Monty's car and break into Stephano's suitcase, still there. There they find a bunch of parts that, when assembled, become the murder weapon. While Violet is busy, Sunny wanders off and heads back to the house with the Incredibly Deadly Viper.

The two give Mr. Poe a scare and Klaus appears reading Uncle Monty's notes clearly stating that the viper isn't an aggressive reptile and go on to prove the inconsistencies in Stephano's statements (about how he said he was not an expert on snakes despite showing extensive knowledge of them). Violet appears and puts the murder weapon back together with parts she'd discovered from Stephano's suitcase and explains how the murder was committed. Mr. Poe is convinced that the Incredibly Deadly Viper couldn't have killed Uncle Monty and Stephano was the prime suspect. He is revealed to be Olaf but, just when Poe was about to arrest him, he manages to get away yet again with the help of his henchpeople also revealed to be in disguise to Mr. Poe.

Climax[]

The Baudelaires follow Olaf into the garden maze, but run into Jacquelyn instead who is disguised as a statue. She reveals that she was a friend of their parents and promises to do everything she can to find Count Olaf. The children are taken away by Mr. Poe yet again and are shipped off to their Aunt Josephine, who Jacquelyn said is a "fierce and formidable woman." Jacquelyn then attempts to capture Count Olaf aboard the Prospero, threatening him with a harpoon gun, but he evades capture, jumping off the ship.

Deviations from the novel[]

  • In the book, Olaf threatens the children with his knife, while in the TV series he hides Sunny in one of the suitcases and threatens to hurt her.
  • In the book, the Hook-Handed man comes as Doctor Lucafont. In the TV series, all of them come, with the Indeterminate Gender Person being Nurse Lucafont instead.
  • In the book, Dr. Lucafont calls out the Mamba du Mal as the killer snake when he finds the venom. In the TV series, Olaf claims the Incredibly Deadly Viper did it, just like the film.
  • In the TV series, Count Olaf escapes into the labyrinth while the others leave by van. In the book, he and the Hook-Handed Man just drive away.
