For Beatrice –
I would much prefer it
if you were alive and well.

The Baudelaire children are left on Damocles Dock and instructed by Mr. Poe to take a taxi up to their Aunt Josephine's house. The house in question hangs off the side of a cliff and nobody answers the door when the children ring the doorbell.

Aunt Josephine greets them and welcomes them into her home. It's a peculiar home as they learn that the once "fierce and formidable" Josephine is now afraid of everything. She is also a stickler for grammar and corrects the children whenever they aren't grammatically correct. She and her deceased husband Ike were once friends with Father and Mother and that they used to create secret codes when they would picnic together. Because of the approaching hurricane, Josephine leaves the children to go to the market and get supplies. Violet, Sunny, and Klaus use this time to do a little snooping.

They manage to get Josephine's safe open and find pictures of the once "fierce" woman. Beneath the pictures, there is a book titled, “The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations.” Before they can read it Josephine returns and the children scramble to put everything back in its place. She has come with an uninvited guest: Captain Sham aka Count Olaf. Unlike Monty, Josephine doesn't see through his disguise and the two go out to spend a romantic evening together.

The children are left to think of their own escape plan but are interrupted when they hear a sound coming from downstairs. They rush down and find that Aunt Josephine has jumped to her death. Klaus finds a suicide note that once again named Count Olaf as their guardian.

Meanwhile, Father and Mother steal a plane and escape after receiving a coded message.

Production errors

  • As the taxi drives up toward Josephine's house, the taxi driver's mouth does not move as he speaks.
  • When the children are discussing exchanging their gifts amongst themselves, in one shot Sunny puts her rattle in a bowl, and in the next it's on the table.
